Google Adwords vs Facebook

Who's better? There' only one way to find out. Fight!!!

Intro

Google Adwords has been around for some time now. It is a trusted way of getting visitors to your website by paying for advertising space based on selected keywords. Facebook has also its very own Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising tool. In this article we try and compare the two to help determine who is better.

Targeting

Google Adwords works by bidding for certain keywords which a Google user would enter. Facebook works in a similar way, however is aimed at user groups and interests.
For example, imagine you wanted to create Adwords and Facebook accounts to promote a Book Printing company in Nottingham. You would setup the account with the following rules:
Google Keywords: 'Book Printing', 'Cheap booklet printing', 'Book Printers'.
Facebook Interests: 'Poets', 'Writers', 'Book clubs', 'Authors'.

Both campaigns can be targeted to only appear to those in certain areas in order to save wasted clicks and therefore money. Facebook does this using the user's known location within their profile. Google does this using their internet connection's IP address.

Google and Facebook show adverts to audiences in two different ways; each having their own benefits. Facebook shows adverts to those it thinks will be interested in the product or service it's promoting. Google on the other hand shows adverts to those searching for a particular product or service. In basic terms, Facebook sells a service - Google offers a solution.

Who's cheaper?

On average, Facebook maybe 80% cheaper than Google Adwords when paying for clicks.

Reports

Both solutions provide comprehensive reports. In many ways the data provided is fairly similar with information regarding impressions, clicks, times of day, and so on. For the vast majority of people managing their own accounts, the information provided in the dashboard is plenty. However, Google provides much more detailed information for those requiring a more in-depth analysis.

Conclusion

It's almost impossible to find a winner. It's like comparing apples to apples. Each service has great benefits based on what you need it for. Google can reach a much wider audience, however Facebook can better target those who may be interested in the advert. But this has an almost stagnant pool of users which over time reduces the impact of campaigns. Google Adwords should allow constant growth and improved results.
